World War I for Kids and Teachers

For Kids

In 1914, there was an alliance system in place between various countries around the world, a system of secret treaties. These treaties were defensive - if someone attacks, we'll help you and you help us. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia in 1914, each country called on their alliances for assistance. Some countries remained neutral, but over 30 countries, from six different continents (Antarctica was not involved), lined up on one side or the other. This war was called the Great War. Today, we call it WWI.
